Pastoral Letter - March 12, 2020

St. Anne’s Episcopal Parish

P.O. Box 337

Scottsville, VA 24590

March 12, 2020

Dear Friends,

Under the guidance and directive of The Right Reverend Susan Goff, Bishop Suffragan and Ecclesiastical Authority in the Diocese of Virginia, all services of public worship in the diocese are suspended for the next two weeks. Furthermore, following the sensible lead of other parishes in the Charlottesville area, we will cancel all activities for the same period.

Some of what this means for us:  both the 9 am service at St. Stephen’s and the 11 am service at Christ Church are cancelled for the next two Sundays, along with the Thursday morning service at St. John’s.  Likewise, the Tuesday evening Lenten series which was to begin this Tuesday, March 17, is cancelled, hopefully to be rescheduled for a later time.

This extraordinary action is taken out of an abundance of caution to help in protecting the most vulnerable members of our flock and our neighbors.  I share Bishop Goff’s view and that of most medical professionals, that such aggressive actions may help in limiting the rate of spread, thus saving lives and avoiding the over-taxing of our hospitals.

I return to the parish this weekend from the first leg of my scheduled leave. Donna and I have cancelled our visit with family in Paris, which we had planned for later in the month. In the coming week, I look forward to working closely with our wardens and vestry as we look together at the many questions this raises in the minds of all of us.  We will make every effort to stay in close communication with you.

In the meantime, despite these policies designed to encourage social distancing, we will work together as a parish to stay in touch, to care for one another, and somehow find creative ways of worshipping “together” in virtual community.

I hold you close to my heart and in my prayers as we make our way through this.
